This past weekend we finally, after 13 years, planted some fruit in the yard. I bought bareroot plants, and wheedled, cajoled, and bribed my roomies to help put them in. One of them I didn't give any notice to, so he couldn't talk me out of it *again*. I only fell down once while planting the blueberry bushes.
I checked on them this morning. So far, so good, they look like they are settling in nicely.

When Dubh came out to Oregon from MI, he met my mom. Who offered him Marionberry cobbler.
He thought she was pulling his leg. After all, Marion Berry was the mayor of Washington DC.

Speaking of 'fruit of the vines'....
Well, I never did get around to making chocolate covered cherries, but, those three mason jars have traveled around with me, usually stuck in storage somewhere or other. And last fall, whilst moving stuff from rented storage to the barns-to-be-purchased, I came across those three jars. And the cherries are very brandied. So, I transferred them to one large container (yes, they are still good) added some sugar, have let them sit for a while and will soon be decanting them to small jars for gifts.
So, if you ever make it up here, come and collect your jar of 'Drunken Cherries'.

Shades of the mulberry tree and ants in pants
Do you remember when we were roomies way back in Illinois and there was a mulberry tree in our back yard, that didn't produce any mulberries for about five of the almost seven years we lived there? Then someone in the neighborhood landscaped their yard and planted a mulberry tree and suddenly WE had mulberries all over the patio, us and everything. I never managed to figure out how to get up in the tree to pick them though. The dog seemed to be the one who got the most out of them.
We also had a patch of rasberry bushes out in the back of the yard on a little hill of sod and dirt from the garage excavation, I think. Do you remember the day I sat on the hill for quite a while happily picking rasberries until? The until was until I got this strange sensation on my gluteous maximus and ran to the house doing a weird dance as I had ants, quite literally, in my pants, and they were the biting kind too. You thought it was hilarious and I am oh so glad that we didn't have a video camera in the house at the time. Petey Bow Wow and Boo and the grandparents would have loved that one! G Dutchey and G Horace were visiting at the time, as I recall.
As long as you planted the plants in pairs they should thrive. Remember that it can take a couple of years for some of them to produce fruit. It depends on how old the plants are that you planted and how they take to the trauma of being replanted. Talk to them and make them happy berry plants and they will give you an abundance of goodies! Think of how the six little strawberry plants that I planted on Estelle Ave grew to such a nice carpet in the garden. Only six little plants, they wouldn't take up much room, I cajoled. Heheheheh

RE strawberries: we have ivy. It is trying to eat the yard. I hate the stuff, especially the big leaf type we have to deal with. We cut it back every year. This spring, I plan on getting an orchard tray (like two dozen) of little strawberry plants, and seeing which ones win - starting the strawberries a little away from the ivy, and encouraging them to spread. If the damn yard has to be overrun by a creeping plant, it should at least produce food.
BTW, the zuchinni was worse for overabundance - I will go for cukes if I go for anything phallic, at least I can pickle those.
Yes, I remember ants in the pants. I can't look at an active anthill even now without wanting to chuckle... ;-) You would've made belly dancers jealous with that shimmy.
