I get angrier, and angrier.
Bush and his war frenzy, wagging the Republican dog. The Washington DC police playing repressive sweep arrest games on legitimate free speech protest *and* passerby!! The unemployment statistics that lie - people who have exhausted their unemployment benefits (like me) aren't counted! Ashcroft and his shitting on the Constitution.
Then add the RIAA and the MPAA, and their heavily bought patsies in Congress and the courts. COPA, DMCA, and their ideological offspring. The creeping copyright extensions that Congress keeps passing to appease their corporate masters. The legislation of "filtering" for funding in schools, when the filters all block too many legitimate sites, and keep their block lists secret.
I am a member of the EFF, and today I spent some of my dwindling cash to join the ACLU. I want my card. If I end up in one of Ashcroft's camps, I want to proudly display my ACLU card as they march me off to the showers.
Whether it's antiwar protestors, activists stopped from flying because they are on someone's "watch list", banned books, censored media, harassed medical marijuana growers in California, BATF setup victims, shafted consumers, computer spying, etc - I do not want it said that I said and did nothing until they came for me.
I am not young, I am not physically fit, I am not rich, I am not popular. I have little to offer the cause of freedom except my one small voice, saying "NO, THIS IS WRONG". But let history be my judge - I have not, and will not until death itself, be silent in the face of injustice and making mock of our constitution that so many have died to protect.
Repeat after me:
I solemnly swear to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. I swear to uphold the rights of the individual against the dehumanizing effects of ruthless government, business and religious entities.
Print this out. Post it far and wide. Take back our nation, make a future for our world.

I generally don't like the Republicans and their enslavement to the Religious Reich. I also have some beefs with the Democrats for their complicity in all of this mess, as well as their tendency to pass regulations "for the persons' own good".
But Bush puts the average Republican that we've seen in the last 30+ years (since Nixon) to shame with his sheer disregard for anyone but his cronies.
That's going some.

Go Ravan Go!
My wife (an American citizen who didn't vote for Bush) and I went to an anti-war rally in London today. We went because we believed we should add our voices, make our views known - what you said "No, This is Wrong!"
I have a certain luxury - I am fairly unlikely to be gassed, batoned, arrested etc for expressing such views, I am fairly unlikely to be stopped from boarding a plane and unlikely to be deported since I was born here. My wife has less luxury, being a US citizen and only here on the one year visa allowed for being married - we don't get the permanent visa until next year. Even so, we went, and would still go. As I said in my LJ entry - I hope the security forces were there to take my picture, I hope they did get my name and address, because I want them to know how I feel.
I can't repeat your pledge, since I am not a citizen of the USA, but I will go with the spirit!
