CD Burning and Music Mixing: Why I Hate the RIAA
by Ravan Asteris, 9/25/2002

I hate the idea of "copy-protected" music on CD. I have not bought a mainstream music CD since the Napster thing started. I hate the RIAA that much.

Why, you ask? I'll explain.

Back when it was records (vinyl), I had a nifty setup where I could record from record to cassette. the cassettes were portable, didn't require me to haul my albums around, and, most importantly, I could make custom mix cassttes!

I would mix cassettes to follow themes, moods, or even to tell a story. I seldom liked to listen to the same artist/album repeatedly straight through. Whoever mixed them and set up the play order usually had no aesthetic sense, and the factory order frequently sucked. So I mixed.

Fast forward to today. CDs are much more durable than cassettes. They are the recordable madia of choice. But now the fucking record companies are telling me I can't do custom CDs from music that I've bought!! Fuck that!

If I can't reorder the play of one or several CDs, by the same or different artists, I won't buy the things. I don't like the default ordering, I don't like having to haul my original in my car or to work to listen to them (especially if they get stolen, I'm out $15-$20 per thin plastic disk.)

If the RIAA wants to force me to listen to my purchases in only the way (and on the devices) that they deem "proper", I won't play (or pay), period! I'm not going to pay $15 -$20 per CD to be dictated to, and told that I must only listen to original CDs on "approved" equipment. No fucking way!

All of the legal mumbo-jumbo about rights, piracy, fair use, etc boils down to this: If I pay $15 - $20 per CD, *I* will be the one to decide what I listen to, where I listen, when I listen to it, how I play it (PC or stereo system), and what track order I have before and after, and whose music I mix it with!!

I'm not renting the CD, folks. I bought it, it's mine to use, and not just in some stupid narrow way decided by an idiot in a suit in a glass and steel office based on some bogus market research. Give me back my control, my rights, and my flexibility. Otherwise, I won't buy your shit. Got it?
