So now we have the "Bush Doctrine", that basically says "If we consider you a 'threat', we will strike first. We will throw a sop to the international community by seeking UN approval, but even if they don't approve, we will strike first."
This is not the attitude of a democratic republic, it is the attitude of an imperial power. Like the British Empire of old (gunboat diplomacy and all), or even post-republic Imperial Rome, the Bush Doctrine advocates unilateral action on the flimsiest of pretences - if the President (Imperator?) of the US considers another nation to be a "threat".
Proof, as in hard, solid proof is not required - just conjecture and paranoid imaginings by the US foreign intelligence community and politicians seeking to enhance their party, business buddy, and personal fortunes. Even the wishes of the informed public are not heeded, they just step up the propaganda, which is put out by willing allies in the corporate media empires.
When a German very astutely compared Bush's methods to Hitler's, the Germans suddenly had to fear the displeasure of the big US dog and it's tame puppy "allies". The fact is, it seems that Bush has taken as his guidebooks "Mein Kampf", "1984", "The Handmaids Tale", the writing of Julius Caesar, and other similar items.
Even before this, we've not been the best neighbor. Between McCarthy, Nixon, Reagan, Bush 1, and such, our CIA and other intelligence services have finagled and manipulated international affairs for the sake of our entrenched corporate interests. We didn't learn from Vietnam (at least not our "leaders"), and now we sit and wonder why much of the "third world" hates us. It's simple, really: we are governed by hypocrits, both in politics and career civil service.
George W. Bush makes me ashamed to be a citizen of a country that lets him hold office as President (or even shoeshine boy), and I hate that. Cheney, Ashcroft, Fleisher, and Rumsfeld are all embarassments to my country, and to the human race.
I feel like I'm living in a bad science fiction distopian imperial future, with the average citizen blindly waving the flag and believing the lies. Can someone please put the book down now?
