Side note: I've stockpiled food off and on for over a decade. In times when I've been catastrophically unemployed, my back stock of staples has helped stretch my meager unemployment, so I didn't have to pick between rent and food.

Having grown up in a place where we were periodically either Cut Off from the outside world, or without electricity, or both, I've found it very useful to be prepared for eventualities.

Ya took the words out of my mouth. Even though I live in town, we get cut off on a pretty regular basis. Tree limbs on power lines, power line washouts, you name it. Nice to have an old house, but crap, it's a pain in the butt sometimes. LOL
