My Jeep is in the shop. It was overheating at idle, and it's getting warmer, and I didn't want to warp my block. I also wanted an oil change, et al, and my A/C recharged. My guesstimate is ~$1,000 for those items. So I took it in this morning, when they opened at 8 ...
I called them at 10. The air filter was soaked in oil, and severely gunked - a problem in the pcv system. My radiator had hot and cold spots - probably clogged. They were still trying to see if they could flush it out. They hadn't even looked at the A/C, because they needed the car to run at idle for a while to do so.
They called me at 1pm. New radiator - from Jeep. The whole pcv system of like 7 hoses and things needed replaced - part from Jeep. Still need to finish that before they can look at the A/C. $800 so far....
They called me at 4:30 pm. During the test drive after the radiator and pcv system replacement, it did its "clunk"ing thing when accelerating, worrying the tech. (I knew there was one other thing I wanted them to check - the drive train & u-joints...) The guy put it up on the lift, and freaked out - the U-joints were almost gone - no caps left. They need to send the drive shaft out to be checked over. They did look at the A/C - no freon left, compressor is toasted. The main guy will give me a quote on the u-joints and A/C repair/retrofit tomorrow.
My guess now? ~$2,000. So much for the rest of my tax refund.
