I promised myself a laptop if my job lasted until my birthday. My birthday is tomorrow.
I cheaped out a little and got a DeskNote - I spent less than $1000 ($69?.?? with battery pack, tax & all.) I'm installing Debian Linux on it as I type. It's a fast little box, but it has some limitations: no pcmcia slots; cd, not cdrw; no floppy; and the LCD display tries to chop off sections of screen real estate. It's light weight, and has a 20Gb HDD, so it is better than the one I have from 1996! (I really need to get a new one more often than every 7 years or so...)
Still, I feel like a big spendthrift... I paid for it out of my checking account - no credit cards.
