Another year older...

...but not adding debt!

Laptop Update It never fails. New piece of gear, 3x install to get it right. It's X, as usual. I have no clue what the refresh rate and stuff on a laptop LCD is! The fact that I have to boot it using " video=vga16:off" to get it not to munch the bottom three lines of the screen is annoying. I haven't got the driver for the video system (SiS 305, if you care), and I'm racking my brain as to what the differences with laptop vs desktop are wrt getting X to run. I think I need to install XFree86-mach (machine??) to work with it, but I gotta do a little more homework.

Work Update I'm here. So far, so good. It's been close to 5 months, and I haven't strangled anyone... ;-)

Hi there! Hope your birthday was happy. Gma's is today. She is 88! Wow! 481-2119 and you know the area code.

I may have a present for you. My server uses sis305 and I think I may have the drivers you need. When I finish reloading and fixing my win2000 I will make a copy of the two disks that came with the mainboard and send them to you. If you can use them fine. If not fine too. Love ya, kid!

Happy B-day, somewhat late.

xf86-mach? -mach is for the Mach brand of cards -- check the usual suspect sites to troubleshoot our issue; my X skills are, alas, rusty (but if you want CLI advice, I'm there).

Hoppy Bird-Day (belated), as well!

The main reason I run X is so I can have lots of terminal windows open, plus a browser.

Sis305

No, Ravan, I don't run linux on my server/network. I run Win2000 on the 1.5 gig server and win98 on the 400 mhz slave machine (network). I also just re-imaged Bill's emachine ( God knows I hate proprietary caca pre-loaded and no key on the cd) to get rid of the junk there-on. I had to do a new install on the server and found that it is a Stratitec board. The windows driver CD is v1.2 from 2001. It is the CBBB02 cd. Their email is support@stratitec.com which might be a way to get linux drivers. You are still welcome to a copy of this disk if it will help. It has the sis305 video drivers for all of the recent windows OS's. Have you tried drivers.com?

It looks like my old creative cd rom drive gave up the ghost today as it gets detected but won't run. ARGH It's back to eBay for me this weekend I think! Love ya, kid!
