Magpie Monday

[personal profile] dialecticdreamer is hosting Magpie Monday with a theme of "Surprises and Celebrations."

I write mostly gentle fiction (with warnings when I skirt more aggressive elements, of course) which doesn’t exclude drama. With the theme of “surprises and celebrations,” readers can offer negative surprises. The range for prompt ideas is as wide as the readers can explain. “Cold Cash is surprised when he is brought in for questioning by the Feds after the attempt to kidnap the Cort twins,” is a legitimate prompt idea. It is not, however, planned for the story arc.

Poem: "Meeting in the Middle"

Based on an audience poll, this is the free epic for the July 1, 2025 Poetry Fishbowl. It was spillover from the April 5, 2022 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] rix_scaedu. It also fills the "communication" square in my 4-4-22 "Aspects" card for the Genderplay Bingo fest. This poem belongs to the series Arts and Crafts America.

Magpie Monday for July 2025

I am, at the moment, dragging around by sheer willpower and the two or three individual muscles that don’t ache.

The whole day caught me by surprise, so the fatigue is also an unexpected and unwelcome surprise.

Which is oddly fitting, as that is the theme that I’d chosen for this month. Let’s call it surprises and celebrations.

Now It Can Be Told

I know I've been a touch mysterious about why I went to the UK and why I'm with Cheryl Morgan. Today was the big day, and now that it's done and we've finally made it back to her home in Wales, I can finally reveal what the big deal was and why we could not talk about it.

It's not clickbait, really! )

They treated us very well, and they took much better professional photos compared to my quick shots here. These two are here just so you who follow me know what happened. I haven't labeled all of my photos, and I hope to go back soon and talk more about how yesterday went. I will say that the university treated both Cheryl and I very well, and I am extremely proud that she asked me to be her +1 with her at this event.

More later when I have had more sleep and time to work on labeling photos. We'll be here at Cheryl's place, with me working on the Day Jobbe tomorrow and Wednesday. I'm taking Thursday and Friday off, and Friday we head back up to London, where we'll stay at a hotel near Heathrow to make it easier for me to take my flight home. I'd love to stay longer, but medical, dental, and fannish commitments during this very busy part of my year are piling up.

Birdfeeding

Today is partly sunny and mild. It drizzled for much of yesterday.

I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 7/14/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 7/14/25 -- I picked a chocolate cherry tomato from the new picnic table.

EDIT 7/14/25 -- I picked a few blackberries. The first crop is done, the second is not ripe yet.

EDIT 7/14/25 -- I watered both picnic table gardens.

Middle Summer and Bear's Day!

Hi! Around 13th of July has been the "middle of summer" in Finland and Estonia at least historically (because it's the warmest time of summer, not related to sun's movements) and in Estonia it's also been called the Bear's Day. That's why I wanted to share a little bear related runosong (traditional Finnic oral poetry) if that's okay by the rules! With my clumsy translation. It is a spell or chant or prayer so a bear wouldn't attack cattle :]

Reverse Jetlag

I got to bed around 10 PM or so last night and slept around six hours, waking up around 4 AM BST, which is 8 PM PST, the time zone from which I traveled on Friday-Saturday. This seems very strange to me.

We don't have to be out of the hotel until Noon today (Monday), and have a booked car to take us to our next destination at 11:45 AM, so if I do get back to sleep for a few hours, that's fine. It just is a a bit unexpected. This must have something to do with how I got actual sleep on the flight from SFO to LHR on Friday night into Saturday.

2. 35-billion-year-old Moon rock found in Africa rewrites lunar history

A 2.35-billion-year-old Moon rock that fell to Earth in Africa is rewriting what we know about lunar volcanism. This rare meteorite, studied by UK scientists and unveiled at a major geochemistry conference, reveals that the Moon was volcanically active far longer than previously thought. With a unique chemical makeup and an age that bridges a billion-year gap in Moon rock samples, it suggests the Moon had internal heat sources that persisted for ages.

RenFaire Sunday

We headed up to the Bristol Renaissance Faire on Sunday. We got there a bit later than we might have hoped, mostly (I think) due to my own lateness getting out of bed and functional, but we got a nutritious breakfast into everyone before going, so I will count that as a plus.

The kids had a great time running around looking in stores, buying a few things, and enjoying various shows along with us. I didn't spend much time in the stores as Gretchen and I own a great many things and there were a variety of attractive benches available, as the crowd seemed a bit thin. I don't know if this was because the weather so far this summer has been miserably hot, but today the weather was quite nice and didn't get much above 80 degrees.

We came home, fed takeout Chinese to the kids and got the Midkiffs on the road home once again later than we might have hoped, but fed. :)

Overall, I will count this as a successful weekend.

And now I am going to go take a cold shower and cool off. :)
