Not Up For Debate

So, certain types of people on social media think that things like civil rights, religious rights, gay rights, or women's rights are subject to "debate" and "negotiation"

What a crock of shit.

Seriously, would these straight, white hetero, Christian men like for the rest of us to start "debating" if they should be "allowed" to marry a woman, be straight without losing their jobs and homes, walk down the street without being subject to search because they might be a Christian Nationalist terrorist or opioid addict, or whether they should be allowed to purchase condoms or viagra without the permission of their wives or mothers?  I very much doubt it.

You see, when marginalized people stand up for their rights, they aren't demanding "special" rights. They don't want to jump the line at the county clerk's office for a marriage license, they don't want to annul hetero marriages, they don't want to outlaw Christianity and deport all Christians and white people as suspected Christian Fundamentalist or White Power terrorists.  They don't want to search every white person at least once aevery ten minutes when they're walking down the street, and put them in handcuffs on the ground if they've ever had martial arts training.

That non privileged people just want what the privileged people have - equal rights to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, privacy, freedom of conscience, freedom of association, ability to work and be paid the same as anyone else with equal skill, the right to have a place to live that isn't in a slum, etc.

These things aren't suitable for debate. Because if a person doesn't think that marginalized people are entitled to equal rights, then they don't believe that those things are rights at all.

Dear Whoever

If I have to justify my rights to you, or "ask nicely" if I can speak, act or live, then you don't consider them rights at all, and we have nothing to discuss. If for you it's just "policy" or "debate", but for those like me it is life or death, I do not consider that you have a say in the matter.

Sure, you might claim to be "involved(a)", but if I'm "committed(b)", and you can just butt the fuck out.

Note: Think a ham and eggs breakfast. The chicken is (a)involved, the pig is (b)committed.

Taxes & DOMA

It cost me $564 to get my taxes done this year, because of DOMA and Prop 8. If those two things weren't there, I'd make an honest woman of DataWolf, and do the (joint) taxes myself for a cost of ~$150.

More Discrimination in the Tax Code

It's bad enough that S. and I will have to *pay* someone to do our taxes because the federal government refuses to recognize same-sex pairings, but California does. California is a community property state, so even if the Feds don't agree, CA requires married type filing.

Now I see this, after setting aside a shit-ton of cash for our joint medical expenses:

Health Care FSA

Eligibility Rules
...
"Per tax law, expenses for domestic partners are not eligible."

Mother fucking fuck!!! I have already spent $1300 out of that this year for dental work for S.

Now I might have to "pay it back", even though it's my fucking money!

Nevermind that California says it is for both of us, the bigots in Congress trump it. Whatever happened to "full faith and credence?" Can the bigots in Congress so blithely wash that away with the stroke of the Bush bigot's pen? Oh, the "strict constructionists" in the Supreme Court aren't very "strict" when it clashes with their ideological (religious) bigotries.

Seriously, I am beginning to once again start hating anyone who belongs to what passes for a "Christian" church these days. I want all of those homophobic and/or misogynistic people to stick their heads in the toilet and *flush*. Between their fucking war on gays and the war on women, they need to be prosecuted as a hate group. That includes the anti-abortion and anti-gay bastards in Congress.

I am sick of this shit. Handmaids Tale was a dystopia, not a fucking manual!

Why don't those mother fuckers learn to mind their own business when it comes to people's personal lives? I really don't give a fuck what their angry little god who thinks he's king of the hill, and his preachers, says about gays or fetii. I just don't - it's not theirs to say. (All the other gods laugh at the deluded idiot anyway.) They are such hypocrites when it's them or their families that they should be ashamed to show their faces in public.

Must Read

You've probably heard, if you are paying attention, about the murder of Trayvon Martin. Oh, the cops are calling it "self defense" and letting his murderer walk free. It's in that racist cesspit Florida, after all.

Now go read this: The Crime of Being Black: Trayvon Martin and the Everyday Reality of Racist Violence in America

Think about this the next time you get twitchy about seeing a black or latino teenager just meandering down the street. He's just a kid, with as much right to walk around in public as any adult. Wearing a hoodie, hood up or down, isn't a fucking criminal act, damnit.

Hell, if you meet a kid wandering down the street, meet his eye, smile, say hi or wave. He's your neighbor, and has a right to be there, just like you.

PayPal Being Asshats, Again

First, read [personal profile] naamah_darling on LJ or DW.

This is not the first time PayPal has dicked people over. They tried to tell DW what they could "allow" people to post, and when DW refused, they said "Well, we won't process your payments unless you conform." DW stuck to their guns and found another payment processor. It hurt them, and still does, because PayPal has a virtual monopoly on online payment processing.

Now they are telling Smashwords and other small web-based publishers what they can publish, or they won't process their payments. Smashwords caved.

What fucking business is it of PayPal's what you buy with your money as long as it's legal? If they act as a gatekeeper on content, and whether you can purchase it or not, then they become liable for the content, even if they never touch it. That's the difference between a common carrier/service provider and an editorial relationship.

But they are doing it.

I know from a number of ex-employees that they are a bunch of nasty, chiseling, repuke banksters without a technical clue one in their higher ranks, who will backstab and gaslight anyone who does not conform to their lockstep tightass mentality. They regularly drive "different" employees to mental breakdown and/or suicide. I already hate them for that.

This is right in line with the social conservatives attempt to impose their views on everyone through propaganda and market limits. (How can you explore and question an idea that you are never exposed to?)

Recommendations for alternate payment processors are cheerfully welcome.

I wish I was rich enough to start my own.

Hey, PoC?

If you're gonna accuse all white people of having "Mammy issues", and also of taking over any fight for rights, common decency, or whatever, then don't accuse me of being "passive-aggressive" and doing nothing when I fucking tell you "I know I personally don't do X, and don't give my money to it. Anything else, you're driving, what do you you want me to do?"

You know why? Because you are expecting me to be fucking psychic, and somehow mystically know how you want white people to help, and when we don't, you accuse us of some fucked up mammy shit. I never had a "mammy", or any other "help" when I grew up. I don't crave it now, either. Does not apply, sorry to disappoint you. I'm not your stereotypical white chick.

I'm doing what you have told me you want: Staying out of the drivers seat, because it's your fight, not mine.

I try to be sympathetic, but if I can't understand *why* some people treat others in some really fucked up ways, it's not because of "privilege", but because I don't treat people in those fucked up ways!

There's some things no one should have to put up with, I don't care their color, ability, gender, gender identity, religion, or any other artificial division we make in the definition of human. The fact that some jerks think those things exclude people from being human pisses me off, but I can't walk up and change them. Sorry to disillusion you. I can refuse to do it, support it or feed it. That's it, without some other inspiration from you, because I don't really have any other tools or knowledge at my disposal. I'm not rich and powerful.

So I will do my best to not step in your way, and I try to ask what you want.

But I'm really not into getting abuse for being born white, any more than you are into getting abuse for being non-white. I'm not going to assume what's best for you - that's fucking patronizing - and I'll thank you to not assume that I know how you want me to help.

I try to be understanding of experiences I've never had. But some shit I don't, and can't get my head around. Not just color issues, either, but lots of it dealing with breaches of common (to me) courtesy and respect. I don't condone it, either. But that's not good enough for some people.

BTW, this is in my blog, instead of someone else's, because this kind of piss and vinegar doesn't belong in somebody's "home" that isn't party to it.

Fucking Sick

Video shows white teens driving over, killing black man, says DA - I grabbed the link from [personal profile] karnythia's post on the subject. More people than just those that follow her need to see this.

This makes me sad, angry, and a whole lot of other things.

A bunch of teenagers beat and then killed another human being because of the color of his skin. No other reason.

I could go into the cultural shit behind it, but I won't. It's just fucking wrong.

It was wrong 50 years ago, it's wrong now.

Now the victim's family gets to deal with everything that it dredges up, inside and out, including the freaks coming out of the woodwork, on top of burying the victim of a senseless, vicious murder.

Lynching isn't gone, they just don't bother with the rope now, they use pickups instead.

Can I leave the planet now?

On Abuse Within Community/Subcultures

In another post on someone else's journal, [personal profile] mac posted this link: The Revolution Starts at Home: Confronting Intimate Violence Within Activist Communities. It mentions a book that I currently can't afford to order, but also has a link to an excellent PDF of the zine version.

It is an intense read, but very valuable, IMO. So far I'm only a third of the way through it. One takeaway I have is something I knew at a gut level, but didn't really follow all the way through: Just because a person is an activist doesn't mean they automatically are not capable of being an abuser.

I know, peripherally, of incidents in various subcultures/communities I'm involved in that are not pretty. What I hadn't really internalized is how much it happens, but is ignored *within the community*. Sure, the outside will take a hint and make it a federal case, but ignoring it within isn't the solution either.

BTW, for those who wonder why I am bothering with any of this, since it's not my fight? Because I can. Because if someone hates me because of what I say on the net, it wouldn't be the first time. Because I have this obnoxious tendency to ask "Oh, really?" and be a bit sparing with my trust and credence. Not everyone whose journal I follow do I like or trust, either.

I'm sorry if I don't conform to your idea of what a pagan/feminist/queer/gimp/fan should be like. I'm not trying to please you or conform, and pushing me to do so just gets my back up and me being contrary. Call it crazy if you like.

But if I can inspire someone to think past their knee-jerk, then it's worth it.

That's why I've chosen to highlight this link/document - because it has made *me* think.

The Real Cost of the Health Insurance Racket

Go read When "minor" and "devestating" are used in the same sentence. I'll wait.

The most brutal part:
"
They called it a minor stroke...but the results were devastating.

However they found that both arteries feeding the brain stem were either partially or almost fully blocked and the decision was made to place stents into those arteries and restore flow to that part of the brain. Some of the tissue was already dead from lack of blood flow and oxygen.

The stents were the main plan of attack...

Until they found she was uninsured." (italics mine)
Yes, they could treat it in a jiffy, fix it all up, IF ONLY SHE HAD INSURANCE. But she worked for a NON-PROFIT, and was in the retirement gap, so was UNINSURED. So now, this person who has worked to help people without computers get them, may just DIE OF A TREATABLE STROKE BECAUSE SHE LACKS INSURANCE OR THE MONEY TO PAY FOR IT!!

THAT IS WHAT THE CORPORATIST GOP AND THE TEA PARTY HAS BROUGHT THIS COUNTRY TO!

Is this America? If you aren't a rich stockbroker, or in the service of one*, you don't deserve to live? Is this how far we've fallen?

This woman isn't eligible for Medicare, and now the GOP wants to make Medicare harder to get, so more people just end up waiting to die of treatable conditions.

I guess that's better than starving due to the cuts in Social Security that they want to make, so that people my age don't get back what we've paid in to all of our working lives. Oh, yeah, we were supposed to save "enough" out of our ever-shrinking wages to invest in the great Ponzi SchemeStock Market in 401(k)s. (Mine have all shrunk over the last ten years, unless I literally added boatloads of cash I couldn't afford.) I bet our corporatist overlords will be happy to import melamine contaminated dog food for us to eat so we die and are out of their hair even quicker. After all, a slave who can't work should be put out of their misery, right?

FUCK THE TEA PARTY AND THE GOP WITH A WAD OF C-NOTES FOLDED UNTIL IT'S ALL CORNERS

* Corporate wage slaves are by definition in the service of the rich stockbrokers who own, buy and sell their employer's stock.

A Note on the Giffords Shooting

I can't say that I didn't see this shit coming. The brownshirts just haven't picked their uniform yet.

From my predictions on terror:
The biggest terrorist acts in the US will be from home-grown, non-Muslim, right-wing radicals, and will be virtually ignored or downplayed by the corporate media as "lone wolf acts". Those who do investigate will find that some elected government officials are involved, but they will be shouted down as "conspiracy theorists" or "engaging in character assassination".
This is not the first (the Tiller assassin was a right wing terrorist, downplayed by the media as a "lone crank"). It won't be the last, unfortunately. Not until we as a nation get a spine and start indicting people who advocate "reload"ing, "locked and loaded" and "dead liberals" under sedition laws.

If Palin, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Bachmann and their ilk were Muslim, they would be in Gitmo right now. But they're not, they're "Christian", and they wave the US flag and Christian Cross. So they get a pass from the corporate media, our law enforcement, and our society. That's Christian privilege. So is the fact that a gunman following their exhortations is described as a "lone nut", but if a Muslim (or anything else) advocated the same crap, and someone followed through, the whole race or religion would be tarred with the same brush (like what bigots say about the mythical "new black panthers".)

Welcome to fascism, people. It's here. I'm just waiting for our Kristallnacht. This isn't even it, BTW, but it's getting there.

"Juvenile" Cruelty, Real Consequences

I'm glad I never lived in the dorms. Some days my fellow humans make me cry...

Rutgers, Friends and Family of Tyler Clementi Mourn Suicide

just because I didn't kill myself, doesn't mean I didn't feel like I was dying

This type of shit is unusual in its absence, not in its presence. It's the bullying that all gay, bi and trans kids go through, even now. More if they're fat and/or geek - it's additive, not either/or.

Most turn it inward. Many die by their own hand. Some turn it outward.

Cruel and Unusual Punishment

For The "Crime" Of Being Old And Gay

Read the article, then read the pdf of the legal complaint, that is even more shocking.

I want to know why the fucking defendants aren't in fucking jail...

Oh, wait, that's right... THEY WERE EMPLOYEES OF SONOMA COUNTY!!! They were just following orders doing their jobs, right?

But hey, gays in California have all the rights that straights do, really - the Catholics and the Mormons said so!

Except when it fucking counts - when we're old or helpless, when the homophobic bigots are the government officials supposed to help. Then gay is the new nigger.

Why aren't there any mainstream stories on this shit? Why is the press paying attention to that failure Palin and the shit she spews? Oh, yeah, that right - the "liberal" media is actually corporate owned right wing propaganda now.

The American Taliban Strikes Again

Dr George Tiller was gunned down in the lobby of his church by an anti-abortion terrorist today.

Yes, we have domestic terrorism. Operation Rescue, and their lunatic fringe followers, are exactly that. Same as the radical anti-gay bigots, the white supremacists, or the anti-government nutjobs. I really wish that the government would take them as seriously as they do Muslim Jihadists. The Christian Taliban deserves to be watched and arrested for their plots as much, if not more so, than the few Muslim extremists in this country.

I recommend that people who want to "do something" donate to either Planned Parenthood (protecting doctors and clinics is expensive) or the ACLU in memory of Dr. Tiller.

So the H8 folks won, for now.

The tides of time and justice flow against them. All of the bible thumping, science denial, and sheer homophobia are an evolutionary dead end. They fear what they can't control, what they can't shame, what they can't bend to their and their small, petty God's "will".

Now, I'm bi, I could "choose" to be "straight", but reality isn't that way. But I can pass if I want to, be the "high yeller" of the LGBT spectrum. Others can't. When a man is only attracted to men, he can't change it. If he could, our society wouldn't have uncloseted gays - any sane person would chose to be straight, if they had a choice.

But the person I love is female, not male. Also, all of my full gay friends have rights too, rights that the stupid desert religions can't believe away.

This nation was founded on the principle of equality, even if the founders fell short of that ideal themselves due to their own cultural blind spots. In the end, equality and love will conquer the bible based hate and fear.

We need to speak out, gay and straight, on how gays marrying strengthens our communities, our families, and our nation.

We need to secure the favorable tax codes, inheritance rights, housing rights, hospital visitation rights, medical decision rights, and legal testimony rights that now *only* accrue to "married" hetero couples. These rights are just not there with "civil unions" or "domestic partnerships" - they just aren't. It's not only separate, but decidedly unequal. Anyone who really thinks about it knows it. But the churches lie to their parishioners, saying "oh, but they have civil unions, its the same, but marriage is sacred". They don't really understand that gays are cheated of some of the "meat" of marriage rights.

If civil unions/domestic partnerships are so equal to marriage, then all these whiny religious gits wouldn't mind giving up state sanctioned marriage entirely, would they? They could keep "marriage" as a purely religious matter, and any legal benefits would be associated with civil unions. But if you suggest that, they whine, saying "it's not the same", then turn around and tell us again that it is "equal".

This isn't over. However, if you are against gay marriage, please, remove yourself from my "friends" list. I'm no longer willing to be "tolerant" of any viewpoint that wants to deny me and mine their rights. Tolerance doesn't mean doormat, doesn't mean open headed acceptance of everyone's bullshit, doesn't mean allowing bigots and bullies to make the rules, doesn't mean swallowing someone else's dictates and morals as binding on anyone else. I'm tolerant, not a pushover.

If you don't approve of gay marriage, don't marry someone of your own gender. But don't even dream that you have the right to make me live and love by your fucking religious rules. No more nice gay.

Health Insurance

This isn't someone else's talking point, it's mine:

"Better a government bureaucrat than a corporate bureaucrat (like we have now.) The government bureaucrat doesn't get a bonus based on denying coverage to people.

Take the profit motive out of health insurance."

Seriously, I hate health insurance companies. They are a leach on our society, right along with "investment banks". Hell, some combine both parasitical business models.
